More than 5 million people now live in Scotland after increases in inward migration and life expectancy.Scotland's record figure, attributed in part by Scottish ministers to the successes of devolved government in Edinburgh, is largely due to several hundred thousand people moving to Scotland to work, as well as a modest growth in births compared to deaths.The Scottish Government is working hard to promote Scotland as a positive place to live, work, study and remain The Scottish Government intends to hold a referendum of the Scottish electorate on the issue of independence from the United Kingdom in the autumn of 2014
